How to Choose the Right Cake for Your Occasion

From birthdays to weddings, here's how to think about flavor, size, and design when picking a cake for your next celebration.

How to Choose the Right Cake for Your Occasion

Choosing a cake is about more than picking a flavor you like — it's about matching the cake to the moment. Here's how we think about it when a customer isn't sure where to start.

Start with the guest count

Cake size is usually driven by servings, not appearance. A single 8-inch round tier comfortably serves 8-10 people, while a two-tier cake can serve 20-30. If you're unsure, it's almost always better to round up — leftover cake is never a problem.

Match the flavor to the season and the crowd

Rich chocolate and caramel flavors tend to suit colder months and evening events, while lighter options like vanilla, lemon, or fruit-filled cakes work well for daytime and warm-weather gatherings. If you're feeding a mixed group, a crowd-pleasing classic like chocolate or vanilla is a safe bet — you can always add a bolder flavor as a smaller secondary cake.

Think about how it will travel

If your cake needs to survive a car ride, a hot venue, or a few hours on a dessert table, buttercream holds up far better than whipped cream or delicate fondant details in warm weather.

Design should follow the occasion, not the trend

A birthday cake can be playful and colorful. A wedding cake usually leans toward simpler, more elegant designs that photograph well. An anniversary or retirement cake often works best with a personal touch — a favorite color, a shared joke, or a meaningful detail — rather than an elaborate design.

When in doubt, ask

The easiest way to get it right is to describe the occasion, the guest count, and your budget to whoever is making your cake. A good baker can turn that into recommendations faster than you can scroll through inspiration photos.
